WePETE is a local non-profit in Ripon, CA. Our goal as an organization is to promote empowerment through education. Currently we are focusing on the arts as the vehicle for empowerment. We have launched a pilot Drama Club at Ripona Elementary to provide students an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of theatre while gaining confidence and skills to excel today, and beyond. This club not only provides a strong foundation for students interested in pursuing performing arts, but also teaches important life skills including public speaking, teamwork, creative thinking, and problem solving. One important part of putting on performances is set design. We have come up with a practical and simple way to accommodate set design for years to come, but it will require some construction. Our Love Ripon project will entail building 5 rolling stage flats - stage flats are a flat piece of theatrical scenery that is painted and positioned on stage so as to give the appearance of buildings or other background. Our flats will be 8' x 5' frames, with a plain, hard surface, mounted on wheels for easy positioning. The idea is that students will be able to paint scenery on large canvases that can be hung from the flats and changed out/repositioned throughout a performance.
